 Hot Bluegrass Licks
Mandolin
Licks — Here are some favorite
hot licks tabbed by the NEZ, the Old School's world-class mandolinist
(and copy writer). There are several mandolin sites around the WWW
with tabs of various songs ranging from jazz to traditional fiddle
tunes, but I've found very few (if any) tabs of hot Monroe-style mandolin
licks. Here are some for you to learn and work into your songs.
Other mandolin exercise videos, tabs and MP3s are available at williamanesbitt.com
NOTES:
1. I use the term "Monroe-style" loosely. Like any other mandolin
player, I draw from a variety of sources. So these might be better
classified as "Monroe-hybrid."
2. Some of them might require digital athletics you're not used to.
Pinky dexterity is a must. Practice, baby.
3. Why go to all this trouble? Because I love playing this style,
and would love it even more if lots of others did as well. Enjoy!

Guitar
Licks — Here are some guitar
licks, also tabbed by the NEZ. Most are pretty blues-based, patterned
loosely after the inimitable Tony Rice (anyone who's tried to imitate
him knows how inimitable he is). Here again, these are licks, not
tunes. There are a zillion websites you can go to for tunes.
NOTES:
1. Use any picking pattern you like, but these are tabbed assuming
the traditional alternating up-and-down picking motion.
Happy pickin'!
